Sierra Leone
MercyShips has a landbased clinic in Sierra Leone. There were some generator/electrical problems that needed to be looked at, so Oebele ("from Friesland -NOT Netherlands!") and I were sent from the ship to see how we could help.

Located in suburban Freetown, the 'Aberdeen West African Fistula Clinic' has a day-patient GP but mostly performs surgery on woman to repair damage caused by childbirth complications. Because of their injuries these woman would leak urine and become outcasts in their village. On the day they leave the clinic they have been given a new dress to symbolise a new start and everyone celebrates.
On first appearances one could say that Freetown is 'nicer' than Monrovia.
We stayed at the crew house about 20 minutes away. Nice, apart from the noisy generator outside our window.

Every morning people are carrying water up the hill.
Although we were busy most of the time we took Sunday afternoon off to go the beach
and flew back home after a week.

Looks like more fun than work!! ;-) ... are you coming thru the US when you head back to NZ?
i fly Ghana, Dubai, Melbourne, NZ. I have the weekend in Ghana while I wait for the flight, so will be nice to see the place, then it's travelling almost non-stop rest of the way.
